POKER SLANG TERMS M thru Z

  M 

MAIN POT
The main pot is the one in which all active players participate in, have contributed to, and are eligible to win.
 
MANIAC 
A player who bets, raises and reraises without regard to the quality of his hand.

MAVERICK
A highly skilled player.(SHARK)

MUCK 
Pile of "dead" unplayable cards. Throwing cards in the muck is in itself a MUCK.



 N

NO-LIMIT POKER  
A game where there is no maximum bet. Any bet is acceptable, stack permitting.

NUTS 
The best possible hand at the time, but not a LOCK unless all cards have been dealt.


O

OMAHA  
Each player receives 4 hole cards and must use exactly two of them (together with 3 of 5 board cards) to make a hand.

OMAHA H/L  
OMAHA played as a high-low split pot using 8 as the low qualifier.

OPEN-ENDED STRAIGHT 
Four cards to a straight which can be completed by drawing a card at either end. 

OUTS  
Cards NEEDED in your hand that will improve it, and often substantially.


P 


PAIR 
Two cards of the same rank.

PASS 
To check, if checked to, but fold, if bet to. 

PAT 
In (any style) draw poker, not taking cards in draw round. Stand Pat.

PAY STATION  
A player who rarely folds, frequently calls better hands, usually loses.

POCKET  
Pocket=Hole. Hole cards are the two cards dealt down for your eyes only. 

POCKET-ROCKETS
Hole cards that are POST 
Add money to the pot as an ante or blind, before any cards are dealt.

POT 
The total amount of money active or in play.

POT LIMIT  
The maximum bet is determined by the size of the pot at the time.

RAGS  
Board cards that are usually small and useless.

RAINBOW 
A flop in which no two cards are of the same suit. 

RAISE  
To wager more than required, forcing other players to put in more money or fold. 

RAZZ
7-card stud variation. Loose style lowball- but, lowest 5 cards wins. 

RAKE  
Money taken from each pot and given to the house.

REBUY  
The option/act of additional chips bought in tournament play. 

RERAISE  
To raise after an opponent has raised.
 
RIVER  
The very last card dealt in a hand. Often changes game drastically. "Cry me a River." 

ROYAL FLUSH 
An ace-high straight flush, the best possible hand in regular poker.

RUSH
A streak of good hands, a good run.

SANDBAG 
Playing a strong hand as if it were only a fair one.(SLOWPLAY) 

SCOOP  
To take all of a split-pot. Either by winning both halves. Or there is no winning hand for one-half, and you win the other half. 

SEE  
To call, as in: "I'll see you" or "I'll see that bet".

SET  
In Hold'em, three of a kind where two of the cards are hole cards
 
SHARK  
A good/crafty player, often posing as a fish early in the game. 

SHORT-STACKED  
Playing with a only a small amount of money. 

SHOWDOWN 
The end hand where all active players reveal their cards and the pot is awarded to the winner(s)

SIDE POT 
Created when an active player is out of chips, vested in the main pot. ONLY for the other players and their wagers, and he cannot win the side pot.

SLOWPLAY 
To play a strong hand weakly, by checking instead of betting or by calling instead of raising.(SANDBAG)

SMALL BLIND 
The first blind is the small blind because the forced bet is usually one-half the big blind.

SPLIT  
A pot that is split between two or more hands.

STACK 
The amount of money (the stack of chips) a player has on the table.

STEAL 
To win the pot by bluffing.

STRAIGHT  
A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence but not in suit.

STRAIGHT FLUSH 
A hand consisting of 5 cards in sequence and the same suit.

SUCKOUT
Dealt cards that improve one's hand enough to win. Started as Underdog.

TEXAS HOLD'EM  
A Hold'em game where players receive two hole cards with 5 community cards where highest 5 card hand takes pot.

TIGHT  
Someone playing fewer hands than average.

TILT  
Playing wildly because of being upset. Usually betting and raising a lot, regardless of hand quality.

TOURNAMENT  
A highly structured game  that progresses by eliminating players until only one winner remains.

TREY  
A three.

TRIPS  
Three of a kind. In Hold'em the term SET is used when two of the three cards are hole cards.


  U 

UNDERDOG
Before all the cards are dealt, a hand that does not figure to be the winner.

  W  

WASH
Throwing all the cards face-down in a big pile and mix them up together.

WHEEL
A-2-3-4-5 Lowest possible hand in lowball.(BICYCLE)  
 

WSOP
WORLD SERIES OF POKER. A series of several different poker games, culminating in a $10,000 buy-in no-limit Hold'em tournament once a year, the winner of which is crowned the World Poker Champion.  


  Z

ZOMBIE
A player who has an un-readable blank stare. A "perfect" poker face.
