TammyNC and ALL POKER- CRUSHERS.............

Well now, Tammy! This will teach you, I hope, that we take ALL questions seriously around here!

The answer to your off-the-cuff question, "What are the odds of getting a Royal Flush?":

Those odds happen to be exactly 1 in 2,598,960 hands dealt.

I can explain exactly how I caculated that, but do you really want to know badly enough to read 5 or 6 pages of mathematics stuff?

LOL

Your ever-lovin' PokerGuru

I just happened to read something in Gambling Online Magazine today that I had to go look back up when I saw Tammy's question about the odds of getting a royal flush.

So now I have a follow-up question for you, Guru - are the odds of getting a royal flush in a table poker game the same as the odds of getting a royal flush in a video poker game?? Or can there somehow be different odds for each?

Here in this Gambling Online magazine, it says, "...the probability of drawing a royal flush in 9/6 jacks-or-better video poker is 1 in 40,391. The probability of being dealt a "natural" royal flush without a draw is 1 in 649,740."

Does it make sense to say that if someone has played 650,000 hands of video poker, and has not yet hit a royal, that they have a better chance of hitting a royal next time they play, than someone who is playing the game for their very first time? Does it make sense to say they have a better chance of hitting a royal than someone who just hit a royal the LAST time they played?

Or do those factors not make any difference? Are they all supposed to have the same chance regardless? If that were so, I just don't think I get it, because it sure seems that if a royal is dealt approximately 1 in 650,000 hands, that your chances of getting a royal increase with every hand played after the 650,000th one (if you had never gotten a royal before). But what about someone who got 2 royals in the 1st 650,000 hands they played? Shouldn't that lessen someone else's chances of getting one? Maybe they got YOUR royal!

Oh, that kind of stuff is too confusing! Intriguing, yes, but very confusing!

One other thing and then I have to quit thinking about it for awhile (!):
are the odds of getting ANY hand - a straight, a flush, or even just any random hand- all different? Of course, they'd have to be, I think, but that's something else I don't think I understand...

OK enough taxing my brain for now - back to playing PacMan!

thanks

Okay, sweetheart, let's see if we can make this "odds of getting X, y, or z thing" a lot easier for you to understand. (Althogh there is NO reason for you to know anything about it to beat even a poker champion.)

Yes, for any hand you mentioned (for any hand at all, for that matter, )there is a determined probability of the odds you will get it. You do not have to calculate all these odds for yourself because they have already been calculated for every possible hand by experts who enjoy doing that kind of thing. And since they do not change, there is really no reason for anyone to have to refigure them.

The reason confusion slips in the mind's door is this: The odds depend on the number of cards dealt in a hand. Therefore, they will always be the same for a hand where 7 cards are dealt. But they will be different for a hand that gets only 5 cards, because you have 2 fewer chances of getting it then since you get 2 fewer cards. Make sense?

It really is that simple!

It's a shame, but I have found it to be true sometimes that the guy who is called the expert seems to try to make things seem more complicated than they really are. Maybe that's because if he makes it as easy for you to understand as it is for him, he will no longer be considered all that superior to you in intellect. But if he can keep you confused, he then can always expect you to need him. I'm sure you have run into that type of person once or twice in your life.

On the other hand, you have what I would call The "great" educator. The great one does not consider himself to be a true success at educating you until he has taught you enough that you can be ranked on the same level as he is in that subject.

For example, when you are able to beat me at playing poker as often as I can beat you, then I can consider myself as being a true guru, a great teacher. But not until then!

If you still have any doubts at all about your questions, be sure to let me know. I will be very happy to get into it a little deeper. Okay? The important thing to remember is that it is very simple and is always the same.

Happy to be your

PokerGuru

omg u 2..... LOL. ok, i am so not awake enough to interpret that, i'm not even sure i could interpret that if i was awake... however, I take to understand, that I might see one royal flush before I can't see the cards anymore, but that's not necassily to say that I will, and that I might even see more than one, but that's about as likely as seeing one... and that if i ever get a royal flush... then I am very very very fortunate and should bet my pea-pickin heart out??? YES, INDEED to answer your question!

Bet the farm, every animal and crop on it, and your kids' and grandkids' inheritances if you ever get a royal flush!

And here's hoping you do......and soon!

Believe it or not, it happens to people you know more often than you would ever think. I'm glad I know you! LOL

hehe... I am sooooooooooo glad I know you too, my dear Guruness and all of the PC family! btw... I am always thrilled to see answers to my questions!!! Very Happy but yes, I forget I am talking to a Poker Guru and my brain goes KAA PLLUUT occasionally... but I get it... if I ever see that purty lil 10,J,Q,K and A in from the same family tree... BET THE FARM. rofl. omg... i would die if I get one. well, let's hope I don't die before I bet. But i did have a really awesome one show up two nights ago... and would love the odds on this one. Texas holdem... LOW stakes... KK hole... K9K flop. Needless to say I WON that hand. LOL. But... now tell me if I did this right... only a few ppl called the blind... so I didn't have many to work with... so I low-bet the first bet... got the calls... waited for the next bet, someone bet... so I doubled it, repeat for the turn still not really high... kept everyone in... on teh river... one bet, I raised that to 4 x's and got one call... made back all the $ I had lost for the night and was up 20% overall total. Please let me know about these odds and how successful I was in managing the play, TYVM. Very Happy

Dear Poker Crusher TammyNC,

Girl, I am SO PROUD of you! You have made me very happy!

Now -- you asked 2 questions -- First, what were the odds ? Okay, the answer to that one is that you had less than a 1% chance of doing that. To be exact, the odds were 0.245. Let me know if you want me to explain how it was calculated, even tho it will mean a lot of typing for me. I would still be glad to do it if you are really interested in the math of it.

Secondly, you wanted my opinion of how you played it. Easy to answer that one. EXACTLY AS I WOULD HAVE! You are a poker player for sure!

Proudly,

PokerGuru

lol... i'm beginning to feel like i'm hogging the new members contest thread but i can't NOT respond...

My dear Guruness...
I'm tickled PINK>>> hehe... and guess whot... I finally cashed in one of those 3k+ entrants freerolls tonight... for a whole $1.50 lol... but I held in there and made it. #255... and that was because after that long... I was just so happy to have finally cashed that when someone made a raise on my big blind, and I was holding the K,10 of clubs... I said, what the hay... I've already cashed... lets go for it. I did land a pair of KK... but unfortunately someone landed some AA's... so oh well... I was just thrilled to have finally done it. next time I'll worry about making it higher. I already had played in one tourney tonight, and my brain was fried, lol.

so, I've been playing online poker, texas holdem for about 5 weeks now, and I've cashed about seven times in freerolls. and I've made a few bux at the cash tables.

I'm thrilled. And I have a home at the best POKER FORUM anywhere...... POKER CRUSH..... YIPPEE... and I have a bunch of new friends... a Doc and my very own Guru, to be a groupie to... what more can a gal ask for??? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Tammy,

Honey, don't worry about "hogging" any thread! After all, the more posts we get, the happier we are......and that goes double for me personally!

Congratulations on all the REALLY GOOD poker playing you have been doing!

BUT......You know I have to "get on your case" about the way you played that K-10. BAD GIRL! LOL Now you have been reprimanded! LMAO!

But seriously, and you know because you admitted your brain was fried, WHICH MEANS YOU WERE ON TILT and should stop playing..... DON'T EVER call when somebody raises and all you have is K-10, even if they are suited! That is time to FOLD!

I'm sure you know that but didn't follow the rule because you were "TILTED OUT".

All in all, however, you are doing GREAT!

You are ALREADY MAKING MONEY PLAYING POKER!

Very proud to be

Your PokerGuru

TammyNC - 09.04.2006, 04:29
Post subject:
ok... now I finally know what this "tilt" thing is, lol...
yep, I knew better... and I think I was tilted out... and frustrated w/ some of the people I was stuck @ table with... I still get hotheaded in these tourneys sometimes (yes, I still need to work on that... I got this problem w/ "principal" LOL)... I had just got thru telling myself to play it tight and hold out for as long as I could... and then this ... person raises my big blind which had just gone up to 1k and I kinda felt pot committed, and he'd been calling, raising and all-inning w/ not much of anything, so I figured it was more than worth a shot, and the A, that landed him the pair of A's didn't turn up til the river, so... u know?... I could have held out for another blind or two, but that really wasn't going to get me to the next cash level, so like I said, I figured what the hey... but yes, under normal circumstances I know better than to call a raise on that when I need to be tight. I play really conservatively for the most part so when I call a raise or go all-in, it means one of two things... either I've got a killer hand or I don't buy what the other player is selling, LOL. Very Happy

as always, thanks for the new term, and for the tips, you know I listen! Very Happy

xoxo from your guruness's groupie! Very Happy

Dear Prize student Tammy!

Would you be offended if I told you that your cute little excited hamster represents to me your personality? So positive, upbeat almost all the time, and knowing how to get the most out of life!

You also remind me a bit of another of my prize followers, someone who I hope is about ready to trade in the negative part of her nickname to a positve one!

Now back to your mastering the game of poker.......

You can always change tables anytime you want to if, instead of tourneys, you play more at the ring tables. Those are the ones that are not involved in a tourney. The only players are the ones seated at the table who come and go as they please.

I want to tell you that even tho you played that K-10 wrong, you were the victim of the worst kind of beating......what is called a BAD BEAT. Called that because the guy who won got his winning card on the river and could even have been a FISH......one who is NOT a good poker player.......thus it is called a bad beat. Some poker sites even give a money prize to those who lose a hand because of a bad beat.

One more comment......When you raise or go all in, your reasons for doing so are absolutely the RIGHT reasons! So stick with that strategy. It is good.

Your enthusiasm truly inspires me to my very best at my job here!

Your proud PokerGuru

Very Happy I would NOT be at all offended, as that is exactly what my cute excited little dancing hamster is supposed to represent, me! Very Happy (i'm probably not as cute, not sure I can dance as cool... but am definitely that excitable and hyper, hehe)

I practiced keeping my temper and my hands in check tonight... whilst at an obligatory team freeroll... and had occasion to be tabled up w/ more than a few unscrupulous and annoying players. I managed pretty well, although, the hands did not come tonight, so unfortunately I wasn't able to bring in any points, but did last to top 15% percent. I folded, three K,10 suiteds and two A,10 suiteds, LOL. I admit, it was really hard to hit the fold button, but I did.

apparantly I outlasted 75% of my teammates, who have been playing poker a whole lot longer than me.

ok, now explain to me exactly what a ring table is, so that I understand. I think I know, but I would rather have the real explanation than my guess. My whole intention, beyond participating in team poker, in playing these freerolls, is to gain a range of experiences, and hopefully continue to develop my little "stashes" that are slowly growing at a number of poker sites, and then to get more serious, and turn those little stashes into something, all the while, doing this at little or no cost to myself, while i learn.

thank you so much for both your praises and your admonishments, as i take both to heart, and learn from them and gain more confidence in my plays.

xoxo, from your faithful Guru-groupie Very Happy

(crush'um down, crush'em down, crush'em down NOW!
They're more experienced, I'm more knowin' HOW!)

Dear faithful Guru-groupie Tammy,

AT THE TOP OF THIS POST IS A CHEER I COMPOSED JUST FOR YOU.

Your progress up thru the ranks is amazing! And I believe I know just how you are advancing so rapidly. Tell me if I am wrong. (Altho a Guru is never wrong. LMBO!!!!!)

Your method is to follow these UPWARD footsteps: !. Taking note of all you learn 2. REMEMBERING all you have taken note of 3. PRACTICING what you learn AS you learn 4. Sticking to the practices WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

That is the winning combination at the point where you are in your poker career.

And darn right, it is hard to stick to a rule when your instinct tells you to make an exception this one time. That is why they call it "sweating it out" on your way to the top.

Okay. All is fine. And you have only one question, whuch is really more of an affirmation. You want my definition of a ring table or ring game (same thing). Here it is:

A ring game is confined to a single table. Any player can sit down at any time, buy chips, play poker, and cash out at any time. Any player may also sit out for a reasonable amount of time, their chair automatically saved for them. A player neither gains nor loses any chips while sitting out. Any player has an invitation to sit down at any ring table and an invitation to leave, even if taking most of their money. And neither invitation is usually expressed; just taken for granted.

Keep doin'it and doin'it the way you are doin'it.

I posted everybody's next lesson yesterday in my feature article.

Your lovin'it PokerGuru

yep, ok, well, let's say, those are the points that I"m TRYING... lol, really hard to stick to that I think are helping me to keep progressing... and I actually listen to what people tell me, especially, if I don't particularly WANT to agree with it, those are the ones I really ponder, because of past lessons and those are the ones I know I must pay attention to. I can't claim I am able to keep at my learning and lessons 100%, but I try, i really really try, lol. Very Happy

ok great, ty for defining "ring table or game" for me. That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure. And I love these full detailed explanations or definitions that you give!!!! Very Happy

Just would like to comment on the lack of postings from new members or otherwise. I am a online player and a offline player. There is a huge difference in the way I play online and offline, my theory is the online players are very free with there money (chips) and play more rags than offline players, why is that who knows. And the second difference is that I play four times as many hands in an hour than offline playing. But back to my point if there is one. I don’t post because I am a student of poker and read the post(s) on this site and others to learn how to play properly online and they have improved my game offline as well so what do I post….hum. I don’t want to post garbage for the sake of posting. So I ask that you cut us students of poker a little slack and remove or discredit those who post garbage for the sake of posting. Hello NastySara!

Well! LOL Your post was certainly, what shall I say?...different!

I noticed that you have just signed up as a member. Now you are obviously a gambler. So I will propose a bet to you and hope you accept it. I bet whatever amount you wish, assuming we both are honest and pay our lost bets, that if you are still a member by this time next year, you will look back at your post here and laugh a lot.

The reason: You will by then be part of our very special family-like community and realize that we are all friends...close friends...who truly want to know what one another is thinking about anything anytime.

As you get to know the members, you too will be interested in reading every post and will never consider any post as garbage.
Not even a post like the one you entered here.

You are very sincerely welcome as a new member. I am so glad to see someone else trying hard to better themselves at playing poker. And you have come to the right place to do just that. We have many winning stories and we are almost a brand new sight. By next year..,,,well, the sky's the limit.

I hope you will stick around and check in daily (more often if possible) and get to know the members here for who they truly are.

As for myself, I am a professional poker player who makes a good enough living to allow me time to enjoy myself as a teaching guru on this site.

Need I say more? If the answer is yes, I will be pleased to do just that.

Once again, welcome. You are in for a whole new exerience with poker, which should greatly improve your income as well as your attitude. That was not a nasty statement. Just a true one.

Happy to be
