COMMON POKER PLAYING MISTAKES

Mistake #2: Playing too many multi-table tournaments

Multi-table tournaments tend to have a greater luck factor than traditional ring games. Often, there will be over 300 players competing in a tournament that lasts around 6 hours. While there is certainly skill involved, the luck factor is enormous. Large portions of the prize pool are often dependent on a few coinflip hands.

While tournaments are certainly enjoyable, it is difficult to consistently win money. It is also harder to learn the skills necessary to succeed at poker. Since people who play in tournaments play very few hands postflop, it takes them longer to learn a lot of the finer aspects of the game.

Ring games are available for very low stakes. The players at these games are generally not that good, so it is possible to work on your skills without risking a lot of money. It is certainly fine to play tournaments as well, but I would advise against solely concentrating on tournaments for most people.

In Conclusion-
Tournaments are fun, but may not be the best place to consistently make money.

well said! You are right I know, but that doesn't stop me from playing those tourneys with the dream of winning!! And then I get all mad when someone's 4 7 beats my pocket jacks....LOL When I am being smarter, I play the sit and gos.

Thats what i play the tournaments.I play the ones that have rebuy and add-on.only reason why is that it's a set price and i can play again if i lose real quickly as long as it hasn't had half time which is the cutoff for rebuys and add-on.The only place i've been playing poker is at intertops they have tournament for as little as .10 cents to enter and about 100 players.so the prize really isn't big, well you have add-on and rebuy and after alot of losing it can get expensive.sometimes am stuck at a table with a bunch of all in players and if your playing a $1 or more a buyin you go broke real fast.lol what i wanted to say and got distracted was that i mainly play the tournaments just for fun and pratice.i've only won money on 2 tournaments that i can remember and it was 7th and 10th place,i've been in first for awhile but always choke and end up losing.these tournaments last way to long for me and i get tired and bored.exspecially when there are players taken extra time for a 5 sec decesion,LOL.drives me nuts.I wish they would put a time limit on tourneys cause there just way to long.thank you.oh yeah your right about all of above. It might be esay thou if you play in the tournaments that cost $25 or more cause there arn't alot of players well at least not at intertops.

Well I am a Poker dummy, so I am not sure but I think the less players the better, probably has nothing to do with the question eeekkkkk, but I am trying, I have played a couple of tourneys and I think I am doing good so then I bet to much and go right down the tubes lol. I hope I am doing this right.

I don't deposit often at the poker rooms... I like playing the free tourneys. But when I do buy in, I agree with Shirley.. on the players who take extra time.. just to fold.... I find htat very distracting. It sometimes throws off my whole game.

micro staked ring games can also be detrimental to your game - most will easily pay to see the flop

I use to feel exactly the same. Now I just try to use the time as an exercise in patience. Patience is huge when you are card dead, so I try remember that when I'm faced with a clock milker.

thats great advice, dicky! I used to get all mad and then do something stupid....now I just turn on the TV in the background and try to ignore it. It seems to me the clock mlkers are either trying to get the money or they are trying to make me mad so I will do something stupid. Either way, it doesn't help me to let it get under my skin. Although there are times when I am just not that wise....working on it though!

so true patti, for someone like me thats not got concentration to play a tournament for hours on end then playing ring games would be only way to make money as you can quit when you are ahead or when you need a break you can leave a table and play again later when your mind is ready, but as kid says the lowest stakes tables arent worth the hassle as maybe you can win consistently but plauing against total novices is not always an easy way to win money, so often as stakes are low they will call anything or just go all in, nothing more annoying than playing against people that regularly go all in with an unsuited 4 and 9 as its unreal the amount of times they will make a good hand by time river comes , best way to play ring tables is at a slightly higher stake but well within your budget so as if you are still learning you arent risking way above your means

I thought I posted here already.......but apparently not.

I have very little experience so any advise I get here is good advice.

When playing group games, I agree though with what Broxi said about going to games with stakes a little higher. I think that I would learn a lot from watching others who are more experienced by watching how they play and why I lose (or win). As far as making more money is concerned, I agree with that part too. In medium skill games, a person can use their own skills and have a little bit of an idea why others are betting the way they do. I think though that by playing with other people who are new, I feel less pressure to make the "right" move. (When I feel pressure, I tend to fold with almost any hand) Maybe I would make more money but I certainly would enjoy it more.......at this point in time. So, in the end , I think that (from all that I have read) people may have the best benefits all around if playing in the same skill group in which they feel themselves to be. I hope that made sense?....

As far as time milkers go, I think they may do it to try to throw people off of their game. So, being a person that hates being manipulated into doing what others want me to do, I can practise patience.
