Fire Destroys New Albany Landmark
NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WAVE) -- Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a tavern in Indiana to catch on fire. Steinert's Grill and Pub was open for decades and is a staple in New Albany, but at 4 a.m. Monday, the Cheer's-like bar caught on fire and is completely destroyed.
"What's not damaged by fire or smoke has got water damage," said Battalion Chief Brian Gadd. "The basement's full of smoke because we used thousands of gallons to fight this fire."
The building has been in New Albany since 1877 and with the Steinert's family since the late 1930s.
Rosemary Steinert Denny's father bought the bar. She said her father dreamed of buying it before he left for WWI. When he returned, he did. In 1943, he paid his last check for $14 and owned the building.
Rosemary and her five siblings moved into the house and lived in the upstairs. Meanwhile the tavern survived downstairs through the Great Depression and Prohibition.
"A lot of young kids met each other in there," said Jim Steinert who eventually owned the bar. "I went to a lot of weddings."
The building went through five generations of Steinert's before they sold it in 1998.
"At this point we want to rebuild," said co-owner Jerry Roby, Jr. "I mean there's no doubt that's what we would like to do if we can. It will be hard for this place not to be here. Charlestown Road wouldn't be the same place in New Albany without Steinert's."
