Hello PCers,
You know that unless it is the end of the season and I am playing in the WSOP (World Series of Poker) to try for the title of Poker Champion of the World, I don't normally boast to you about my own current wins. But I'm going to make an exception at this time for the sheer joy of sharing it with you.
I think this was brought on by the way we have been sharing personal things lately - bad or good.
Anyway, a few weeks back (VERY few), I had a big win that brought my income for that week to over $100,000. Most of it was won in a game that was filmed for later scheduling on television.
I want you to know that I try not to let such wins go to my head. I have seen what it does to the personalities of those who DO let it go to their heads....and all I can say is "No thank you!" Now I am not talking about the kind of boasting that I encourage YOU to do when you gain an impressive win! That is a healthy thing that makes us all feel good! The kind I am speaking of, well, it changes people in a very negative way.
Wanting no part of that, I usually just keep my own career's activies that are occurring at the present time to myself.
Having lived a multi-faceted and uncommon life so far, I've learned not to lose touch with who I really am.
So a few years ago, since I love woodworking, I carved some words into a flat piece of wood that was a slice out of a tree which grew in my yard when I was a kid. I hung that plaque on the wall, right beside my mirror in my dressing room, where it remains to this day. Every single day I read those words and think about them.
I would like to share them with you now, so here is what they say:
I am just a Raggedy Andy doll, wearing the Ken doll's clothes. |

Yes, it was, Bower. But not for one of their "regular" broadcasts. It was sponsored by Full Tilt Poker. But lots of ESPN people were in the wings, too, so I don't know if it was a cooperative contract or what.
I wasn't really interested in that aspect of it as long as the signature on my check was good. LOL! It was.
This one was important to me because in non-playing moments my thoughts kept returning to that plaque and also to the tree it came from and how much a part of my childhood it had been.
When the tree had to be cut down, my father gave a thick slice of it to everybody in the family. I held on to mine for a long time before I decided what to do with it. |
